Motorcycling returned this Sunday to experience a tragedy.
The Brazilian
Matheus Barbosa,
a 23-year-old rider, suffered an accident at the Interlagos circuit during a Brazilian SuperBike race and died as a result.
The young man lost control of his Kawasaki and crashed into a metal structure that was behind the safety barriers.
"The accident occurred in the Junçao curve, an area with wide loopholes and no history of serious incidents. Matheus was assisted by the medical team in less than 60 seconds, but despite that he could not survive his injuries. The causes of their deviation is still unknown and they are being investigated by the competent authorities, "wrote SBK Brasil in a statement in which it regretted what happened.
Barbosa was fourth in the championship after taking the podium three times this season.
The same competition already experienced a similar misfortune last year.
In 2019,
Maurício Paludete
and
Danilo Berto
also died at Interlagos and the circuit assured that it had multiplied its security measures, but these have not been enough.
The track, which does not usually host the MotoGP World Championship, does host a Formula 1 World Championship test every year, although this year the race was suspended due to the coronavirus.
