  • Test: at the wheel of the new BMW 4 Series

Built around the massive Big Boxer engine, the largest with this technology that BMW has ever developed since 1923, the new R18 (here you can see a photogallery with more images) aspires to become a cult motorcycle.

First, because it is aimed at a clientele with high purchasing power, given its

minimum price of 24,590 euros

.

Second, because the brand has proposed a simple set in the sense of maximizing the customization possibilities, beyond the exclusive versions that preparers such as Blechmann are releasing.

And third, because its style and general approach drink in the modernized essences of

one of BMW's most legendary models: the R5 from 1936

.

In fact, it is enough to recall the previous foray of the German manufacturer among cruisers - the R1200C of the 90s - to see how it has now aimed at the heart of the segment, with a model of imposing aesthetics and much more classic shapes.

Painted in black, only the chrome and white lines of the First Edition version break the sobriety and minimalism of a motorcycle offered only with a seat, spoke wheels (18 inches in front and 16 in rear), conventional suspensions and a

tubular chassis. double-loop and exquisite visible construction

, just like the rear drivetrain.

Although one element stands out above the rest: the huge propeller with two opposed cylinders that cubes no less than 1,802 cc and from which 91 horses are extracted.

It is a very worked block to make driving as relaxed as possible, with

150 Nm of torque between 2,000 and 4,000 revolutions and a sound and vibrations that are the best soundtrack for the trip

.

The rush is at odds with its philosophy, but aspects such as its weight also advise against it:

345 kilos in running order

(one third is put by the engine) with which, however, any driver should dare given the low seat position ( 69 cm).

To their aid, it must be said, modern electronics come.

It has not been applied to elements such as suspensions, but it does allow the pilot to select the power delivery according to three maps (Rain, Roll and Rock, this configurable).

In addition,

we have disconnectable traction

control, motor drag torque control (MSR) and, as options, a reverse assistant and another that facilitates hill starts, both highly recommended given the weight of the R18.

And when it's time to stop, the braking system (with ABS and semi-integral drive) features three 300mm diameter discs each and four-piston calipers.

The

general sobriety in the design

is transferred to the instrument panel, with a circular analog clock that integrates a small digital display.

The headlight is led and we do not have a screen to protect us from the wind.

For that, you have to go to the

R18 Classic

, the second member of this family, much better prepared for travel.

Add a windshield, saddlebags and passenger seat (all three elements are removable), additional headlights, cruise control and front wheel of the same size as the rear (16 inches).

It has just been presented and BMW has not yet revealed its price, although it should be around 27,000 euros.
