Atlético Madrid has managed to strengthen the selection one month after the transfer deadline.

Thanks to a special rule in La Liga, Madrid midfielder Geoffrey Kondogbia was able to take over from Valencia on Tuesday.

Atlético Madrid lost midfielder Thomas Partey in early October on Deadline Day to Arsenal, which deposited the contractually agreed lump sum payment of 50 million euros.

The Spaniards ran out of time to recruit a replacement and were given dispensation from La Liga to pick another player after the deadline.

27-year-old Kondogbia signs a four-year contract with Atlético, which, according to Spanish media, pays nearly 15 million euros to Valencia.

The Central African Republic midfielder started his career in 2010 with France's RC Lens and later also played for Sevilla, AS Monaco and Internazionale before moving to Valencia on loan in 2017.

The Spaniards took over Kondogbia permanently from Inter in the summer of 2018.

The three-time international of the Central African Republic, who also played five games for France, played 104 official games for Valencia, scoring seven goals.

For the club from the orange city, the departure of Kondogbia is a sporting downer, after Valencia had to let go of several permanent employees due to the poor financial situation.

Goalkeeper Jasper Cillessen's team only took eight points in the first eight games of the season.
