Refunds of tickets in the event that Tokyo Olympics games are canceled due to Corona

Today, Friday, the Tokyo Olympics organizers offered to return the amounts paid for tickets purchased in Japan, promising to pay other amounts in the event that certain games are canceled or fewer seats are available due to the emerging Corona virus, which imposed a postponement of the games until next year.

The announcement comes after IOC President Thomas Bach warned that full stadiums "may not be possible" at the games scheduled for July 23, 2021.

The organizing committee said that local fans who have purchased tickets can apply for a refund between 10 and 30 years. November, or from December 1 to 21 for the Paralympics.

She added that those who have purchased tickets elsewhere in the world will have to request refunds from vendors in their country.

But fans who have bought tickets in Japan can also keep them, and will still be eligible for a refund if the number of fans allowed at the games is reduced.

"If we are unable to provide an opportunity to watch the games due to Covid-19, we will provide an additional opportunity to submit a ticket refund request," the committee said in a statement.

Spokesman Masa Takaya said that the organizers "are not considering any cancellation (of the games) or the possibility of banning the attendance of the masses altogether."

But he added that refunds were being considered at the last minute if the games had to be canceled because an athlete had contracted the Corona virus, for example.

About 4.48 million tickets have been sold for the Olympic Games so far, and nearly a million tickets for the Paralympics, according to the organizing committee.

She did not give details on how many tickets were sold in Japan compared to abroad, but indicated that foreign viewers represented about 10 to 20 percent of audiences in previous games.

According to a budget plan announced late last year, ticket sales should represent 90 billion yen ($ 860 million) of the event's 630 billion yen revenue.

The organizers of Tokyo 2020 and Japanese officials announced Tuesday that a center to combat infectious diseases will be established during the games that have been postponed for a year due to the outbreak of the Covid-19 epidemic.

At a time when questions revolve around how and the ability to hold the Olympic Games, the organizers have repeatedly stressed that it will be held under any circumstances and in a safe and healthy environment, stressing that the vaccine will not be a condition for holding the games, and that another postponement is not on the table.
