Following the scandals of the International Weightlifting Federation, IWF, the US Weightlifting Federation wants to see a change in the organization of the International Federation.

The United States wants an extra congress where, among other things, a new president will be elected.

To achieve this, 20 percent of the 38 member states must support the letter.

The Swedish Confederation had an extra board meeting yesterday where the issue was discussed.

- The Swedish Weightlifting Association supports the US letter.

The United States wants to bring in independent people who can change the organization and we in the Swedish union stand behind it.

We will sign that letter, says Secretary General Sebastian Nurmi to SVT Sport.

- We want a sport free from doping and free from corruption.

This can be a way to bring about that change.

Risk of being thrown out of the Olympics

The hope is that the Extraordinary Congress will be held as soon as possible, provided that a sufficient number of Member States support the letter.

It was earlier this year that the former president of the international federation Tamás Aján was forced to resign after an investigation showed that he bought votes, hid 40 positive doping tests and was suspected of corruption when there was a lack of coverage for almost SEK 100 million in the IWF.

In the last week alone, the union has also had three acting chairmen and one board member, Antonio Urso, has resigned.

"The reason for the decision is that I no longer share the board's political line, which I consider to be crazy and destructive for future weightlifting," Urso wrote in an email to all board members, according to the site Insidethegames.

The International Olympic Committee has also threatened to throw the sport out of the Olympics because the reform is too slow.

- Of course we want the weightlifting to remain on the Olympic program, but it is not something we speculate on, says Nurmi.
