Wimbledon tennis without a spectator in 2021

The Wimbledon tennis tournament will be a Grand Slam tournament next year even without an audience, organizers announced Friday.

The current year’s edition was canceled due to the outbreak of the Coronavirus for the first time since World War II, while the Flushing Meadows Championship was held without an audience and Roland Garros was attended by only a thousand spectators after its transfer from May to October.

The All England Club is preparing for three different scenarios for the 2021 edition: the tournament will be held normally with the attendance of the crowd, matches with a reduced attendance number or behind completely closed doors.

"Establishing the Wimbledon tournament in 2021 is a priority for us, and we are making efforts in this regard," said Wimbledon Executive Director Sally Bolton.

"Our absolute priority will remain the health and safety of our guests, our employees and competitors," she added.

"We are working with health authorities, government sectors, as well as other sports organizations in the country, to understand the various challenges we face during the Covid-19 pandemic," she added.

Next year’s edition will be held from June 28 to July 11.
