During the 1950s and 1960s, Sonja Edström-Ruthström from Luleå belonged to the world elite in cross-country skiing.

Despite a far from optimal recharge before the 1956 Olympics, with, among other things, a frozen little toe, she was only twelve seconds behind gold medalist Ljubov Kozyreva in 10 kilometers.

It was Sweden's first Olympic medal in cross-country skiing on the women's side.

In the relay at the same Olympics, three days later, she passed Norway on the last leg and made sure that Sweden took bronze.

The full hit came four years later at the Olympics in Squaw Valley when she was part of the Swedish team that took gold in 3x5 kilometers.
