Esport: League of Legends more "bankable" than Roland-Garros or the Tour de France

British site specializing in sports marketing SportsPro has published its top 50 most attractive sports entities.

The result of an 18-month-long survey to which 250,000 people aged 13 to 64 responded across the world.

The daily 

specifies that these sports entities are classified according to several criteria such as interest, commitment, passion, enthusiasm, or purchase consideration.

League of Legends ahead of LeBron James' Lakers

If the first places are occupied unsurprisingly by the Football World Cup, the Summer Olympics or the NBA (which has just seen LeBron James' Lakers become champions), twelfth place is more atypical.

She is in fact running for the competitive online video game League of Legends, whose world championships are currently being held in Shanghai.

Esport fans are more committed, more assiduous than fans of Roland-Garros (43rd) or the Tour de France (48th).

A Covid-19 effect

There is therefore undeniably a Covid-19 effect on this ranking, since it is possible to follow esport for free on YouTube or Twitch from your living room.

A trend that is also observed for wrestling, cricket or even the table tennis Worlds: sports with a smaller audience, but very engaged.

And this is the kind of information that is of great interest to sponsors: it is therefore potentially more interesting for them to invest in esports than in the women's football world cup, which climbed to 13th place.
