In 5200 meters, Joshua Cheptegei was helped by the hare that Ugandans turned their backs on in their world record hunt.

He then ran alone the rest of the race but had the light ramp along the rim as an extra hare.

When he passed 7000 meters, he had two seconds on Kenenisa Bekele's world record 26.17.53 from 2005.

Cheptegei increased further and with only one kilometer left, he was a full eight seconds ahead of Bekele's world record.

The 24-year-old even ran around the light, which marks a new world record speed, a couple of times.

Deleted 15 year old record

He ran to the finish line on November 26, 2000 and erased Bekele's 15-year-old world record by more than six seconds.

- It feels great.

My dream has come true, says Cheptegei.

World Record Day in Valencia began with a super race by Letesenbet Gidey from Ethiopia.

To help her, she had seven hares and, just like Cheptegei, the light ramp along the rim.

Gidey had planned a plan with an increase in pace as time went on and the 22-year-old followed her schedule perfectly the first 3000 meters when the hare she took her back on stepped off.

- She looks light and nice in the step.

There are no tendencies to exhaustion, said Bergqvist.

"Dreamed of this"

Gidey was also very strong in the last part of the race and ran to the finish line in the new world record time of 14.06.62.

It is over four seconds better than the previous world record, 14.11,15, set by compatriot Tirunesh Dibaba in 2008.

- An incredible race, says Bergqvist.

For Gidey, the time is also a real improvement on her personal record which before the evening was 14.23,14.

- I'm very happy, I have dreamed about this, says Gidey.

Kajsa Bergqvist was impressed by the new world record holders.

- It was a good margin for both.

There was never any talk about it.

What a magical evening, she says.
