Edwin van der Sar, Wim Suurbier and Ronald Koeman have a chance of winning a place in the best team of all time.

The French magazine

France Football is

organizing this election as an alternative to the canceled Golden Ball election.

The now 49-year-old Van der Sar has played for Ajax, Juventus, Fulham and Manchester United in his career.

He was particularly successful with the Amsterdammers and 'The Red Devils'.

The 130-time international won with Ajax and United, among other things, four national titles, the Champions League and the world cup for clubs.

Besides Van der Sar, Gordon Banks, Thomas N'Kono, Peter Schmeichel, Sepp Maier, Lev Yashin, Dino Zoff, Iker Casillas, Gianluigi Buffon and Manuel Neuer are among the nominated keepers.

Neuer and Buffon are the only goalkeepers still active.

Banks and Yashin passed away in 2019 and 1990 respectively.

Wim Suurbier is one of the nominees for the right backs.

The former fullback, who died in July at the age of 75, played 509 official matches for Ajax between 1964 and 1977.

In that period he won the European Cup I three times, the World Cup for clubs once and the national title seven times.

Koeman (57) is one of the ten names for the best central defender of all time.

The current FC Barcelona coach has competition from, among others, Franz Beckenbauer, Franco Baresi, Fabio Cannavaro and Sergio Ramos.

France Football comes with an alternative to Golden Ball

The other nominated defenders will follow later on Monday, in a week the nominations will be announced to the midfielders and in two weeks it will be known which attackers can hope for a place in the best team of all time.

The nominees are determined by

France Football

, but the winners are ultimately chosen by a total of 170 journalists.

The best team of all time will be revealed in December.

France Football

normally always awards the Golden Ball for the best player of the year.

However, the French magazine announced at the end of July that it would not organize the election this year, because the corona crisis could not give a representative picture of the best football players of 2020.
