"I have decided not to participate in any other motor racing for the rest of my life. It is not justice, but simply the right thing to do."
One day after his disqualification from the Karting World Championship,
Luca Corberi
issued a statement where he not only apologized for his behavior, but also announced his retirement.
The 23-year-old Italian had lost any chance of victory on the tenth lap of Sunday's decisive race after an incident with his compatriot
Paolo Ippolito
.
Frustrated by abandonment, he waited for a new step from his rival's car to throw a piece of his kart at him.
In addition, after the checkered flag, he attacked Ippolito, 16, in the
paddock
of the Lonato circuit.
"When the commissioners called me, I asked them to withdraw my license, because I was fully aware of my irreparable errors. However, as they later showed me, they do not have the power to do so," adds Corberi in his letter.
"I write to ask for forgiveness"
Corberi's father, one of the most responsible for the Lonato track, where his son was facing his first World Championship final in the KZ category in the last three years, would also have participated in
the aforementioned incidents in the
paddock
.
"There is no excuse for something so shameful, something I have never done in my 15-year career. I hope that no one else will see it in the future", assesses the Tony Kart Racing team driver, the same as Spanish
Pedro Hiltbrand
.
"I do not ask for indulgence, because I do not deserve it. I will fully agree with the punishments that are imposed on me. I write this to ask for forgiveness, even if it is not enough," Corberi emphasizes.
On Monday morning, the International Federation (FIA) announced the first steps of its investigation, while
Felipe Massa
, president of the karting commission, described Corberi's behavior as "unacceptable" and clarified that it would have "consequences".
