The French revelation of the 2020 Roland Garros, Hugo Gaston, was eliminated by Dominic Thiem.
In the ladies, Caroline Garcia was stopped dead in just over an hour.
There is only one French player left, Fiona Ferro (49th), who will challenge world number 6 and winner of the 2020 Australian Open Sofia Kenin on Monday, for a quarterfinal place.
Hugo Gaston, 239th in the world and beneficiary of an invitation, saw his astonishing run at Roland Garros end after five sets of fight against world No. 3 Dominic Thiem 6-4, 6-4, 5-7, 3- 6, 6-3 in the round of 16 on Sunday.
Gaston, the last French competitor in the men's table, had defeated triple Grand Slam winner Stan Wawrinka in the previous round.
Thiem, recent winner of the US Open and double finalist out of Roland-Garros, will face Argentinian Diego Schwartzman for a place in the last four.
For her part, French number 2 Caroline Garcia (45th player in the world) was stopped dead in the round of 16 at Roland Garros by world number 5 Elina Svitolina 6-1, 6-3 in just over an hour on Sunday .
It was Garcia's first round of 16 Grand Slam in over two years.
