IFK Gothenburg is fighting for its survival in the Allsvenskan, and Sunday's results definitely went their way.

Helsingborg in the qualifiers fell against Mjällby in overtime while Kalmar, just below the line, lost against Malmö FF.

Varberg started the match nicely and threatened IFK Gothenburg initially, but it was the home team that got the first really sharp chance.

After ten minutes of play, Patrik Karlsson Lagemyr nodded over from close range.

"Don't really score from there"

It was instead another nod that would give IFK Gothenburg the lead five minutes before the halftime break.

At a corner, August Erlingmark met the ball, completely unmarked, and sent it with full force up the crossbar.

- I do not really score from there, but it was fun that it sat today, Erlingmark says to Dplay at half time.

Gothenburg took 1-0 into the break, where Varberg's coach Jakom Persson made four changes.

But it was Pontus Wernbloom who initially in the second half was closest to goal when he nodded close outside the goal.

The longer the match lasted, the more IFK Gothenburg seemed to want to defend their lead rather than go for a second goal.

With the victory, IFK Gothenburg, in 13th place, is now three points ahead of Helsingborg in the qualifiers and five points ahead of Kalmar.

Varberg is eleven on 27 points.
