It was in the sprint that Fabio Jakobsen collided with Dylan Groenewegen.

The 24-year-old flew into the fence and injured himself really badly.

He was placed in an artificial coma and operated on for five hours.

Since then, he has been trying to recover from his brain contusion and the other injuries he sustained.

Now he is ready for a second operation.

"On October 8, I will undergo a second operation to reconstruct my mouth / face.

The operation involves removing bones from my pelvis and placing them in my jaw.

There are a lot of bones missing there, "he wrote on Twitter.

It will in turn heal for a few months before Jakobsen has to undergo a third operation in order to be able to get new teeth.

After Jakobsen's crash, the International Cycling Union, UCI, announced that they will tighten the safety of riders during competitions.
