Serena Williams will not lift her 24th Grand Slam title this year at Roland Garros.

Due to an injury, she withdrew Wednesday, September 30.

The American champion will not play her second round match against the Bulgarian Tsvetana Pironkova (157th), who therefore passes without playing in the third round.

"It's my Achilles tendon that didn't have time to heal after the US Open," the younger Williams sisters, 39, told a press conference.

During the first lap, it had had a sluggish start.

The American needed a set, 72 minutes long, to warm up: led 4-2, then 5-4 serve to be followed by her compatriot Kristie Ahn (102nd), she had come out in decisive game.
