Liverpool lend their "disastrous" goalkeeper to Union Berlin

Liverpool, the English Premier League champion, has announced that its German substitute goalkeeper, Loris Karius, has moved to Union Berlin, on loan, until the end of the 2021 season.

Karius, 27, has carried the colors of Liverpool in 49 matches in various competitions, after moving from Mainz in the summer of 2016. And he was training with the squad of his compatriot coach Juergen Klopp early this season.

"I look forward to my new opportunity in Berlin, and I am happy to play again in the Bundesliga," said Karius, who started his career at Manchester City's English academy.

Karius won great "negative" fame in the 2018 Champions League final, when he committed a series of disastrous mistakes that led to Liverpool losing to Real Madrid 1-3 in Istanbul.

In turn, the director of football in Berlin, Oliver Roonhart, said: "Signing with Loris Karius means ensuring a goalkeeper with local and international experience."

This is the second time Liverpool loaned Karius, after moving between 2018 and 2020 to the Turkish side, Besiktas.

In his home country, Karius joins Nigerian striker Taiwo Oniye, also loaned from Liverpool.
