The 2020 edition of Roland-Garros began on Sunday, postponed for several months due to coronavirus.

An unprecedented tournament, which the French players do not approach in the best of their form.

For Cédric Pioline, tennis consultant in Europe 1, their performance over the next two weeks is uncertain.

INTERVIEW

Roland-Garros kicked off on Sunday morning several months late.

Usually played at the beginning of summer, the tournament will have to deal with cold and rain this year.

To add to these unprecedented playing conditions, French players do not arrive on the courts in their best form, between a lack of benchmarks for some and a search for sensations for others.

“As for the French, it's a bit of a blur. We have no benchmark in relation to the results,” explains Cédric Pioline, tennis consultant in Europe 1.

"I hope for a nice surprise"

At Roland Garros, the Covid-19 weighs down the atmosphere and the morale of the athletes

The French number 1, Gaël Monfils, has not won a single match since resuming the ATP circuit.

"He made a quick exit in Rome. But I hope that the 5-set format (the matches won by the first winner of three sets,

note

) will give some French players the opportunity to settle."

Two big names in French tennis, Jo-Wilfried Tsonga and Lucas Pouille, are also absent from the tournament.

"The number does not absolutely guarantee the presence of one or more French in the second week", regrets Cédric Pioline.

However, he hopes for a "nice surprise".
