Henrik Stenson has not given himself a fun starting position for the continuation of this year's second major.

In the US Open outside New York, the Swedish golf star needed 74 strokes, four over par, and first and foremost, Stenson must aim to pass the qualifying limit before the weekend.

Stenson is probably most upset about his seventh hole, where the foundation for the half-scored was laid with a costly triple bogey.

Alex Norén is said to be at least as annoyed by his two closing holes.

The Swede played stably and after 16 holes had a hang on a top ten position.

When he pointed up on the 17th, Norén was on par, but a shot in a fairway bunker there eventually gave a bogey - which became another when even the last shot of the day went too far to the right and out in the tough ruff.

Norén thus went around on 72 strokes, two over par.

He is with it one stroke ahead of Tiger Woods, who got an even worse finish with a bogey and a double bogey.

Thomas in the lead

Wood's result, 73 strokes, Dustin Johnson could also add up.

Perhaps the competition's biggest favorite, who won the Fedex Cup final this week and has shown senseless form for a month, got uphill early with a double bogey on the fourth hole.

After that, there were two birdies and three bogeys for the world setter.

- It was still not too bad.

But I did not hit enough fairways.

And did not put many putts, says "DJ" at the press conference after his round.

Then it's all the more fun to be called Justin Thomas after the first round.

The American went out early in the day and knocked in six birdies and only one bogey and was able to write 65 strokes on his scorecard - a result that stood out all day.

Player after player entered the clubhouse without improving the leadership performance.

- It was a good day.

I played really, really stable, hit some really good results.

And with the few greens I missed, I gave myself good pair chances with good bunker shots, says Thomas.
