We see another Dutchman in the front.

The sprinter apparently has plans for today.

He makes a small gap with the peloton.

Remarkable: the starting signal is not provided by Tour boss Christian Prudhomme, but by Francois Lemarchand.

Although today is a mountain stage, we are not surprised when Peter Sagan (BORA-hansgrohe) makes an escape attempt.

After just over 45 km there is an intermediate sprint on the program.

The Slovak still goes for the green jersey.

As is known, we will start today without Egan Bernal (INEOS Grenadiers).

Stefan Küng (Groupama-FDJ) and Jerome Cousin (B&B Hotels-Vital Concept) are no longer cycling today.

Küng will focus on next week's World Championship time trial.

Cousin came in late yesterday.

Today we leave from a starting place with a Dutch touch.

The start in Grenoble today is on the ice rink where Kees Verkerk, Carrie Geijssen and Ans Schut won Olympic gold in 1968. # TDF2020

The queen stage of the Tour in pictures.

Is it going to be a Slovenian party on the Col de la Loze today?

Stage 17 of # TDF2020 features two of the hardest climbs in the history of @LeTour: - the iconic Col de la Madeleine ... with unprecedented slopes from a new side- the already infamous Col de la Loze, unprecedented in pro cycling (max gradient: 24%) #TDFdata |

Egan Bernal will sign up for that, we think.

Cycling🚴‍♂️ - Egan Bernal🇨🇴, the 2019 @LeTour 🏆 has abandoned the 2020 Tour.

The last 2 defending champions who abandoned the next year went on to win another 3 Tours. 1980 - Bernard Hinault (🏆78, 79, 81, 82, 85) 2014 - Chris Froome (🏆13, 15, 16, 17).

For the first time, the riders in the Tour de France ride over the Col de la Loze.

The final climb is already feared and is already called iconic by the organization.

What this climb will do with the rankings, reporter Daan de Ridder tells presenter Bas Scharwachter.

Due to the announcement of Bernal, no former Tour winner is in the race anymore.

Last happened in 2014, after the retirement of Contador (and earlier Schleck and Froome in that round).

"Of course this is not how I want to leave the Tour de France, but I agree with the choice that this is the best for me given the circumstances. I have enormous respect for the Tour and look forward to returning. Bernal said in a statement from his team.

Tour de France 5 hours ago

Bernal did not start the Tour de France completely fit due to back problems.

For that reason, the 23-year-old INEOS Grenadiers rider also got off in the Critérium du Dauphiné.

The Colombian was still in good shape in the general classification for a long time, but lost a lot of time in recent days and was therefore able to forget a new overall victory.

Bernal was sixteenth in the standings until today, 19.04 minutes behind leader Primoz Roglic.

Bernal leaves the Tour de France

Egan Bernal will no longer start in the Tour de France.

The defending champion from Colombia, who was busy with a disappointing Tour de France, will focus on his recovery.

Egan Bernal has withdrawn from the Tour de France ahead of stage 17.
