Bordeaux became the first Ligue 1 club on Tuesday to announce the suspension of the opening of its stands, while the Gironde is one of the territories most affected by the rebound of the epidemic.

The prefect of the department had decided Monday to limit public gatherings to 1,000 people.

The Girondins de Bordeaux give up welcoming the public to the stadium in Ligue 1, after the ban on public gatherings of more than 1,000 people decided by the authorities to fight against the spread of Covid-19.

This is what the club announced on Tuesday.

"Football is and must remain a moment of exchange and pleasure between a team and its public, but the health of all remains the priority to contain this virus, which is currently very present in the Gironde", justify in a statement the Girondins.

Limit of 1,000 people

The club, whose next home game is scheduled for September 27 against Nice, is the first to give up hosting an audience this season.

At national level, professional sports clubs have the right to accommodate a maximum of 5,000 people on match days, except for a derogation which has not yet been granted for any L1 match.

But the prefect of the Gironde Fabienne Buccio decided on Monday, in front of the deterioration of the health situation in his department, to lower this gauge to 1,000 people.

In practice, this makes it very difficult for clubs to welcome the public, the limit of 1,000 people also including the staff present at the stadium (cleaning and security agents, stewards, technicians, etc.).

The incidence rate of the disease in Gironde is 158 cases per 100,000 inhabitants, much more than the alert threshold, set at 100.
