Monaco climbed to 2nd place in Ligue 1 behind Rennes, its next opponent, after its victory over Nantes (2-1) obtained thanks to the first goals of young Sofiane Diop (20) and Willem Geubbels (19) on Sunday on the 3rd day.

It was without Djibril Sidibé, hit in the right hip the day before in training, but with the stirring German striker Kevin Volland, that Monaco won their first victory of the season at home, synonymous with 1000th victory in the history of the club in the elite.

1000th top-flight victory for ASM

This victory, which allows the men of Niko Kovac, well present on the Monegasque bench ten days after having tested positive for the coronavirus, to join Rennes and Lille with 7 points, quickly took shape. From the 5th minute, on an offensive from Gelson Martins on the right side, Ruben Aguilar centered and the young Sofiane Diop, out of his mark, made a good recovery of the right pivot (1-0, 5th) to score his first goal in L1.

Without a lack of precision (Tchouameni next to 12th, Badiashile on the 15th bar), and a good Alban Lafont in front of Volland (29th), then Cesc Fabregas inspired the whole meeting (45th + 3), Monaco could have made the match well easier.

Instead, the young Polish goalkeeper Radoslaw Majecki, who was the first in L1, was beaten on the first strike from Nantes (18th).

But Kolo Muani, served subtly by Ludovic Blas, was flagged offside after video assistance intervened.

Finally the season of Geubbels?

Before the break, Christian Gourcuff's men still had the opportunity to equalize.

Majecki was vigilant on a distant attempt by Abdoulaye Touré, then happy when Moses Simon harvested, six meters away, the conclusion of a magnificent collective counter (45th).

By dint of retreating and failing to score (shot from Ben Yedder on the post, 58th), Monaco was scared.

The Canaries even logically equalized on a very nice volley from Blas, served by Dennis Appiah and helped by a hand fault from Majecki (1-1, 62nd).

But Kovac has offensive weapons on the bench.

As soon as they entered (63rd), Henry Onyekuru and Willem Geubbels stood out.

The first served the second, which, with a nice dive, offered a good first (2-1, 65th).
