National champions Liverpool started the new Premier League season on Saturday with a spectacular 4-3 victory over Leeds United.

Mohamed Salah impressed with a hat-trick and Virgil van Dijk also claimed a leading role at 'The Reds' with a goal, an error and a rejected goal.

Arsenal won 3-0 against Fulham thanks to three assists from summer acquisition Willian.

The duel between Liverpool and the newly promoted Leeds United of trainer Marcelo Bielsa was a spectacle from the start.

Mohamed Salah opened the score from a penalty kick in the fourth minute, but Jack Harisson equalized the score eight minutes later after a nice dribble and a hard shot into the left corner.

After that amusing beginning, it was Van Dijk who stood out in both a positive and a negative way.

The captain of Orange headed in the twentieth minute from a corner, but also led the 2-2 ten minutes later.

Van Dijk half-heartedly cleared the ball and was surprised by Patrick Bamford, who passed goalkeeper Alisson.

Leeds United could not enjoy the equalizing goal for a long time, as Salah shot hard and high three minutes later from a beaten free kick.

After the break, Leeds United again showed resilience by coming on the same level for the third time.

Former Eredivisie player Mateusz Klich dived well into the space of the penalty area and hit the far corner.

Van Dijk seemed to score the 4-3 ten minutes before the end when he hit from a corner in a completely detached position.

Referee Michael Oliver, however, rejected the goal, because the Dutchman allegedly committed a foul on Klich.

The repetition showed that the maker of the 3-3 fell through his own hands.

The 4-3 fell just before time thanks to a utilized penalty from star Salah.

Just like Van Dijk, Georginio Wijnaldum got a starting spot from manager Jürgen Klopp.

The midfielder, who has been associated with a transfer to Ronald Koeman's FC Barcelona for some time, played the entire game.

At Leeds United, the Dutchman Pascal Struijk completed the ninety minutes.

Willian is immediately worth gold for Arsenal

There was no audience at the London game, as is the case with all Premier League matches for now.

Fulham, which is back at the highest level after a year, did it without buying Kenny Tete.

Crystal Palace started the season well by beating Southampton 1-0.

Wilfried Zaha already signed in the thirteenth minute for the only goal of the match by working from close range after a measured cross.

Dost helps Frankfurt with a goal to cup victory

In Germany, Dost was again of value to Eintracht Frankfurt.

Partly due to a goal by the 31-year-old Dutchman in the 56th minute, the Bundesliga club won 1-2 against TSV 1860 Munich in the first round of the DFB-Pokal.

Dost's goal came five minutes after André Silva's 0-1.

The home team made the tying goal in the 79th minute - Philipp Steinhart used a penalty - but the equalizer failed to materialize in the Grünwalder Stadium.

Other clubs in the Bundesliga such as RB Leipzig, VfL Wolfsburg and Borussia Mönchengladbach also made it through the relatively easy first round in the cup tournament without any problems.
