Vera Zvonareva, together with German Laura Siegemund, won the US Open in women's doubles.

In the final they were opposed by the third seeded pair of the tournament - Nicole Melichar and Xu Yifan.

Before the decisive game, it was the American and the Chinese who were considered favorites, at least for the reason that their rivals had never played together before the current US Open and generally ended up in the net according to a protected rating.

At the same time, on the way to the final, 36-year-old Zvonareva and 32-year-old Siegemund defeated several strong pairs.

They passed Victoria Azarenka with Sophia Kenin, knocked out the second seeded Elise Mertens with Arina Sobolenko, and in the semifinals they beat the Russians Veronica Kudermetova and Anna Blinkova.

Thus, the major's decisive match was an opportunity for Zvonareva and Siegemund to prove that their results were not accidental.

And in the end they succeeded.

They dealt with Melikhar and Yifan in 1 hour and 22 minutes, winning in two sets - 6: 4, 6: 4.

The meeting as a whole was held for the clear advantage of the Russian-German duo.

Zvonareva and Siegemund performed better on reception, making nine break points per game.

In addition, they made only eight unforced errors, which is almost two times less than those of their rivals (15).

Already at the beginning of the first game with the score 1: 1, Zvonareva and Siegemund made a break, and then were able to take three more games in a row.

At the same time, the German woman acted as aggressively as possible, who managed not only to attack perfectly, but also to act almost flawlessly on the reception.

In the middle of the set, the third seeded pair of the tournament began to play more often through Zvonareva, who looked less confident.

Due to this, the representatives of the United States and China were still able to play three games.

But then, on their serve, the athletes from Russia and Germany still put the squeeze on their rivals.

In the second set, the American and the Chinese lost two games at once, and in the third they almost lost on their serve.

However, at that moment they still managed to escape.

Further, in their rallies, Melikar and Yifan acted more confidently, having twice won their serve under zero.

Nevertheless, by this point, the Russian woman came to her senses and began not only to complement her partner, but also look more stable in some moments.

In addition, Zvonareva and Siegemund won 20 of 24 possible points on their serve in the second set and did not make a single unforced error, which helped them bring the match to victory.

Thus, 14 years later, Zvonareva was able to win her second US Open title and win the Grand Slam doubles tournament for the third time.

It is noteworthy that the last time Russian women managed to win the title of New York Major was in 2014 - then it was done by Ekaterina Makarova and Elena Vesnina.

“Winning the US Open again is a great feeling.

14 years ago I won the title here for the first time, and these two weeks were just great.

Our rivals still have many victories ahead.

I express my gratitude to Laura.

We met almost at the last minute, but everything worked out very well for us.

We had a good time together, and we still have the most positive emotions from playing together.

Will we continue to play together?

Yes, for sure we will perform in pairs in the future.

I also thank everyone who helped me, ”Zvonareva said after the game.

Siegemund, for whom this title became the first at the TBSh in doubles, in turn, also thanked the Russian woman and dedicated the victory to her deceased aunt.

The success of the pair was noted by the President of the Russian Tennis Federation Shamil Tarpishchev.

“Zvonareva is great, she has always played without fail in the Federation Cup, she is a real athlete.

If not for the injury that knocked her out for three years, it could have been the first in the world.

Returning from an injury is comparable to a feat, I do not know of such women who returned to such a level after such a long time.

So I'll call, congratulate - she's a great fellow, she also had a birthday last week, "TASS quotes Tarpishchev.
