Coronavirus: what impact on top athletes?

Since the start of the coronavirus pandemic, the world of professional sport has not been spared.

Basketball players, footballers or even tennis players, many athletes are diagnosed positive.

Even though many athletes only develop mild forms of the disease and some are even asymptomatic, the coronavirus can have significant medium and long-term consequences on the health of athletes.

Monitor cardiac pathologies

For Jean-Bernard Fabre, doctor in physiology of effort and founder of a sports research center, we must be vigilant when an athlete is infected with the coronavirus.

"Top athletes, they practice at high intensity and if they have an underlying heart disease linked to Covid-19, it can be dangerous", explains the former sports coach.

While heart problems are markers to watch out for in an infection, they are not the only ones.

“There are of course respiratory problems, but there has also been work that has reported kidney and liver damage.

When we exert very high intensity, the renal system is under great strain.

For liver problems, this can lead to metabolic disorders which can also be revealed at such times and this is what worries the medical profession.

», Adds Jean-Bernard Fabre.

Our file on the coronavirus

If the doctor in physiology remains cautious and considers that knowledge about the coronavirus is still very recent, he recalls that several studies have been published on the impact of the coronavirus on athletes.

He is preparing himself, with his collaborators at the center, a recovery “guide line” for athletes affected by the virus, which should be published in the “British Journal of Sports”.
