Irish champion Sam Bennett (Deceuninck) won the 10th stage of the Tour de France in Saint-Martin-de-Ré on Tuesday 8 September.

The Slovenian Primoz Roglic (Jumbo) kept the yellow jersey, after this stage linking the island of Oléron to the island of Ré, stressful because of the risk of breakage and fall.

Bennett, very moved and on the verge of tears after the finish, narrowly won in front of the Australian Caleb Ewan, who could not fully recover.

Slovakian Peter Sagan took third place ahead of Italian Elia Viviani.

The hierarchy has remained unchanged in this stage, which the director of the Tour, Christian Prudhomme, watched from afar on television.

Tested positive for Covid-19, he was replaced in his post by François Lemarchand.

Reassured by negative Covid tests for the entire peloton, the riders were on their nerves in this sunny stage connecting the two large islands of Charente-Maritime, accessible by a bridge.

Fall of Guillaume Martin

Several crashes occurred and the Frenchman Guillaume Martin, third in the standings, was caught in one of them 64 kilometers from the finish, just like the Slovenian Tadej Pogacar, before taking his place.

Previously, the peloton had split 100 kilometers from the finish under the effect of an acceleration of the Deceuninck team of Sam Bennett, who had condemned the first two fumbles, the Swiss duo formed of Stefan Küng and Michael Schär .

Sam Bennett, 29, won for the first time in the Tour, in which he is competing for the third time.

The Irishman has 47 victories to his name, including stages in the Giro and the Vuelta.

On Wednesday, the 11th stage is once again open to sprinters between Châtelaillon-Plage and Poitiers, on a plain course of 167.5 kilometers.
