Tom Dumoulin has admitted that he made a tactical mistake on Saturday in the eighth stage of the Tour de France.
The Jumbo-Visma rider decided to take the lead in the group with favorites in the first part of the final climb.
"It was not smart", Dumoulin said on Sunday before the start of the ninth stage.
"My move was not good tactically, because we lost control over the course as a result."
The Limburger felt on Saturday during the first Pyrenees stage that he was not good enough to follow the best.
On the Port de Balès, the penultimate climb of the stage, he almost had to release, after which he decided on the Col de Peyresourde, the final climb, to continue in the service of Primoz Roglic firmly in the lead of the group with all contenders.
Dumoulin's effort left a select group, but the 2017 Giro winner had to let go himself when Tadej attacked Pogacar, leaving Roglic isolated on the Peyresourde early on.
"Tom has instinctively decided to take the lead", sports director Merijn Zeeman of Jumbo-Visma told
"That was not necessary and was not part of our plan. It was well intentioned by Tom, but we really didn't want that."
Tour day 9: 'Dumoulin's ambitions have perished at Peyresourde'
'Wanted to show that I want to give everything for the team'
Dumoulin explained his choice in Pau on Sunday by saying that he - especially to his teammates - wanted to show that he is willing to fully agree with the team's interests.
"I haven't been driving all week with a good feeling, but the plan was to keep me in the rankings, so I gave everything every day."
"But that just didn't work on Saturday, I'm just a little short. I was just hanging on to it at the bottom of the Peyresourde and then I thought: at least I want to show that I am here with the same goal as the whole team. And that is not about riding for BV Tom Dumoulin, but for the goal of winning the Tour with the team I wanted to show everyone that I am not good enough myself, but I will give everything for the team and for the team goal. "
The ninth stage of the Tour, another tough Pyrenees stage, started at 12.35 p.m.
