"Patient No. 1" of Coronavirus in Italy returns to the football stadium

Italian media reported that Mattia Maestre, called "Patient No. 1", meaning the owner of the first confirmed case of the devastating Corona virus in Italy, returned to the football stadium yesterday, Saturday, after recovering from Covid-19.

Maestre, an amateur runner and former soccer player for a fourth-division club, was diagnosed with the disease on February 20 in his hometown of Codogno, about 60 km southeast of Milan.

This was the first locally transmitted case, to be discovered in Italy.

The 37-year-old told Italian media during an amateur football match in his hometown that he was in good shape.

In response to a question about the health situation in Italy, which is currently witnessing the highest number of daily infections since early May, "Let's hope that things will go well."

Maestre spent three weeks unconscious in intensive care.

When he awoke, he was not aware what the new Corona virus was and how far it had spread.

He was discharged from hospital on March 21, but lost his father to COVID-19 two days earlier.

His pregnant wife also became infected, but she recovered and gave birth to a healthy baby girl on April 7.

Italy was the first European country to go into lockdown, and it was hit hard by the virus.

The country has recorded about 276,000 cases and more than 35,500 deaths since the outbreak began.

On Saturday, the health authorities recorded 1695 new cases within 24 hours and 16 new deaths.

On Friday, more than 1,700 new infections were reported - the highest daily rise since early May.
