Roberto Bautista fell in the third round of the US Open against Canadian

Vasek Pospisil

7-6, 2-6, 4-6, 6-3 and 6-2.

The Castellón seemed to have the match under control at the start of the fourth set but, as happened a week ago in the semifinals of the Cincinnati Masters 1000 against Djokovic, the wind changed direction after a medical time-out.

Pospisil, exhausted and with problems in his right thigh, revived to lift the score and get into the round of 16.

Bautista found in Pospisil a very aggressive rival, who came out to prevail from his powerful service, to eat meters inside the court, and to avoid long exchanges with winning shots.

19 signed in the first sleeve for only five of Bautista.

Such was the contrast.

The Canadian became

unapproachable on serve

: he saved the first nine break balls he had against, including seven in the first game of the second set.

Pospisil had already advanced his plan: as soon as the points began to dilate, he was going to try to shorten them with those terminal blows.

The balance of the match speaks of that permanent head or tail:

71 winners and 65 unforced errors

.

Because that premise, just a general outline, was his only hold in the moments of greatest trouble.

The tighter the fatigue and discomfort - on the side, as before Raonic, on the right thigh - the more he hugged that board.

As soon as Bautista managed to put inside one of those rackets that had rained

since 1.93 in Pospisil

, the dialogue was his.

The Spaniard was looking for the backhand, a very weak point, or moving it from one side to the other, delving deeper into that wear than in the third set was already evident.

He hit rock bottom at the beginning of the fourth set, who knows if only the thigh or also the fatigue.

The Canadian requested a time-out to receive medical attention and the one who returned was much more like the one at the beginning of the game.

Little by little he came out of the downturn and regained command.

Squeezing with the service, reaching balls that previously seemed too far, scoring winners that did not enter before.

The game turned around and Bautista, who was looking to return to the round of 16 for the first time since 2015 (his roof in

Flushing Meadows

), ended up falling, unable to reach the Canadian's service.

Roberto Bautista's defeat leaves only two Spaniards alive at the US Open and the two will face two miuras in the round of 16: Pablo Carreño, who will have to face Novak Djokovic, and Alejandro Davidovich, who will face Alexander Zverev.
