The Slovenian cyclist Primoz Roglic, of the Jumbo team, won, on Tuesday 1 September, the fourth stage of the Tour de France, run over 160.5 km between Sisteron and the Orcières-Merlette station, without however succeeding in taking the yellow jersey.

The latter is kept by the French Julian Alaphilippe (Deceuninck-Quick Step) after this first arrival at altitude.

Roglic won the sprint on his first arrival at the top of the 2020 Tour. Julian Alaphilippe is the fifth on the stage.

At an altitude of 1,825 meters, Roglic edged out another Slovenian, debutant Tadej Pogacar, and Frenchman Guillaume Martin.

He won his third stage success in the Tour, of which he is one of the big favorites this year.

The winner of the last Vuelta was the strongest in the leading group which fought for victory at the end of the 160.5 kilometers.

He concluded the work of his Jumbo team in the last kilometers, the Belgian Wout Van Aert then the American Sepp Kuss above all.

The breakaway formed at the start of Sisteron brought together six riders this time (Neilands, Politt, Vuillermoz, Burgaudeau, Benoot, Pacher) whose advantage remained confined to less than three minutes for most of the stage.

Continuous monitoring

Alaphilippe's Deceuninck formation controlled the gap almost permanently at the front of the peloton.

To return to the foot of the final climb on the Latvian Krits Neilands, the last survivor of the leading group who had emerged at the entrance of the last 20 kilometers.

A large peloton tackled the ascent to Merlette, 7.1 kilometers long (at 6.1% average slope).

The rhythm dictated by the men of Alaphilippe then of Roglic prohibited any real attack until Guillaume Martin tried his luck at 600 meters from the line.

Colombian Egan Bernal, 7th on the stage, and Frenchman Thibaut Pinot, 8th, finished at the same time as Roglic.

The next stage, Wednesday September 2, descends into the plain on a 183-kilometer course between Gap and Privas, favorable to sprinters.
