RB Leipzig received prior authorization from local authorities on Tuesday to welcome 8,500 spectators for its first Bundesliga match, against Mainz on September 20, a first in the league since the interruption of competitions in March due to coronavirus.

According to information from the German agency SID, a sports subsidiary of AFP, the authorization remains suspended to the evolution of the rate of infection locally.

Currently, this rate is 3.2 new cases per week per 100,000 inhabitants.

If it stays below 20, the public will be allowed to return to the stadium.

Other clubs have requested

The gauge of 8,500 spectators will allow to occupy one place in five, in compliance with the health protocol proposed by the German Football League (DFL): compulsory masks, distances between spectators, sale of alcohol prohibited and supporters of the team visitor not allowed to travel.

Several other top clubs have already requested permission from their local authorities to bring back spectators, even in small numbers, including Hertha and Union Berlin, Frankfurt and Wolfsburg.
