In the first match, a draw was recorded (3: 3), while in the second match the Russian chess players won with a score of 4.5: 1.5. The victories were won by Polina Shuvalova, Andrey Esipenko and Alexandra Goryachkina.

Alexander Grischuk, Yan Nepomniachtchi, Daniil Dubov, Vladislav Artemiev, Ekaterina Lagno, Alexandra Goryachkina, Alexandra Kosteniuk, Valentina Gunina, Andrey Esipenko, Alexey Sarana, Polina Shuvalova and Margarita Potapova played as part of the Russian national team at the tournament.

During the playoffs of the tournament, the Russians beat the national teams of the United States and Hungary.

The FIDE Online Olympiad was held for the first time. It replaced the 44th World Chess Olympiad, which was postponed to 2021 due to the coronavirus pandemic.
