Halep withdraws from US Open tennis, fearing "Corona"

Romanian tennis star Simona Halep, ranked number two in the world, said today, Monday, that she will not participate in the US Open in New York for fear of infection with the emerging fast-spreading Corona virus.

"After thinking carefully about all aspects in light of these exceptional circumstances we are going through, I decided not to travel to New York to participate in the US Open," Wimbledon champion Halep wrote on Twitter.

She added, "I have always said that my health will be the top priority when making a decision, so I prefer to stay and train in Europe. I know that the American Tennis Federation and the International Federation of Women Women have worked tirelessly to ensure the safety of the participants in the tournament and I wish everyone there a successful tournament."
