Olympique Lyon coach Rudi Garcia believes that tactics have made the difference in the sensational duel against Manchester City in the quarter-finals of the Champions League. Captain Memphis Depay's team was 3-1 too strong for manager Pep Guardiola's team on Saturday.
"You can expect anything with Pep", said a happy trainer Garcia afterwards in Lisbon. "We knew he could come up with something that could get us in trouble. But we won the tactical battle."
Guardiola deviated from his usual tactics in setting up five instead of four defenders. Olympique Lyon took full advantage of that uneasiness in the first half thanks to a goal from Kevin Cornet. Even after Manchester City returned to four defenders at a 1-1 score in the second half, Lyon struck mercilessly with two hits from Moussa Dembélé.
Dembélé initially started on the bench and came in for Depay in the 75th minute. "It was a disappointment for Moussa not to let him start, but I told him he would become very important if he came in. The rescue came off the bench today," Garcia defended his choice.
Dembele was delighted with his lead role in the quarterfinals of the million ball. "It was a tough game against a great team. For a player it is always a bit sad to start on the bench, but I made the difference," the striker told RMC Sport .

'Still an outsider against Bayern Munich'
Thanks to the victory over Manchester City and earlier in the eighth finals against Juventus, Olympique Lyon is in the semi-finals of the Champions League for the first time since 2010. Bayern Munich is the opponent in this on Wednesday, which made a big impression on Friday with a historic 8-2 victory over FC Barcelona.
Garcia states that Lyon nevertheless appears with a lot of self-confidence at the kick-off against Bayern Munich. "Our results have shown that, but we will still be the outsider against Bayern. We will have to put in a shocking result, just like against Juventus and Manchester City."
