Jan Vertonghen continues his career at Benfica. The 118-time Belgian international signed a three-year contract with the Portuguese top club on Friday.

33-year-old Vertonghen was transfer-free after his contract with Tottenham Hotspur expired this summer. He was regularly linked to Ajax in recent months, but director of football affairs Marc Overmars said that the team from Amsterdam already has a good left-footed central defender with Daley Blind. The left back position is not an option for Vertonghen.

Vertonghen played for Tottenham for eight years, but in recent months he almost stopped playing as a basic player. At Benfica he hopes for a good season, so that he remains a permanent name in the Belgian selection towards the European Championship 2021.

The first job for Vertonghen at Benfica will be qualifying for the main tournament of the Champions League through the preliminary rounds. The club from Lisbon finished second in the Portuguese league behind FC Porto last season.

Benfica is still hoping for Cavani

Besides Vertonghen, Benfica presented two more players on Friday. Brazilian attacker Éverton comes from Grémio and German striker Luca Waldschmidt from SC Freiburg.

The ambitious club is also reportedly hoping for the arrival of Edinson Cavani, who is transfer-free after leaving Paris Saint-Germain this summer.

Earlier, trainer Jorge Jesus was already taken over from the Brazilian Flamengo. The 66-year-old Jesus already coached Benfica from 2009 to 2015 and then led the club to three league titles and the final of the Europa League in 2013.
