AZ will play at home against Viktoria Plzen in the Czech Republic in the second preliminary round of the Champions League, the draw in Nyon, Switzerland, determined on Monday.
All confrontations in the second heat are scheduled for August 25 and 26 and will be decided on one game. The match between AZ and Viktoria Plzen is played in the AFAS Stadium in Alkmaar and no spectators are allowed.
Viktoria Plzen finished second in the Czech league last season, well behind national champion Slavia Prague. In 2018, the club took the last of the five league titles for the time being.
Viktoria Plzen was never an opponent of a Dutch club in a European context, although the club has already participated three times in the group stage of the Champions League. Moreover, Viktoria Plzen reached the eighth finals of the Europa League four times in the past decade, but each time that was the end station.

AZ is going for second participation
AZ must beat a total of three clubs to reach the group stage. It may be the second time that the Alkmaarders make it to the main tournament of the million ball, after they were directly placed as national champions in 2009.
