Andrea Bagioli won the first stage of the very busy Tour de l'Ain on Friday. Tom Dumoulin brightened up his return with a fourth place.
Bagioli trumped in the mass sprint after 140 kilometers between Montréal-La-Cluse and Ceyzériat Primoz Roglic (second) and Stefan Bissegger (third). Shortly after, Dumoulin, who had started the sprint for his teammate Roglic at Jumb-Visma, finished fourth.
Dumoulin last played in June last year during the Critérium du Dauphiné. Since then, a lingering knee injury and the corona crisis have kept him aside. He also made his debut on Friday in the shirt of Jumbo-Visma, which took over from Team Sunweb at the beginning of this year.
The Tour de l'Ain is normally a footnote in the cycling season, but is now used by many top riders to prepare for the Tour de France. With Dumoulin, Roglic, Egan Bernal, Geraint Thomas, Chris Froome, Fabio Aru and Nairo Quintana, no fewer than eight winners of a big round make their appearance in the race.
