Israel Start-Up Nation has found an important servant with Daryl Impey for his new leader Chris Froome. The 35-year-old South African comes over from Mitchelton-SCOTT after this season and signs for two years.
Impey was able to choose between a new contract with Mitchelton-SCOTT and an adventure with Israel Start-Up Nation. A phone call from Froome ultimately made the difference.
"It is not often that you get the chance to race with one of the best riders ever, so when Chris called me and said he trusts me and really wants me as a teammate, it was very nice to hear", Impey says on the Israel Start-Up Nation site on Wednesday.
The 35-year-old Froome will switch from Team INEOS to the WorldTour team from Israel next winter after ten years. The four-time Tour winner will again be the absolute leader in the Tour de France at Israel Start-Up Nation, but his new team will have to strengthen considerably to take on the best teams in the pack.
Impey, who, like Froome, started his professional career in 2008 and 2009 at Barloworld, must become the road captain and a "super servant" of the Briton in the Tour. "I know Chris can win the Tour again and it would be great to play a big part in that," said Impey.
The South African has been driving for Mitchelton-SCOTT and its predecessors since 2012. He achieved his greatest success last year with the victory of the ninth stage in the Tour.
