Dylan Groenewegen was disqualified on Wednesday for causing the bizarre crash in the opening stage of the Tour of Poland. The Amsterdammer deviated from his line in the mass sprint, so that Fabio Jakobsen flew completely into the crush barriers.
The 27-year-old Groenewegen started the sprint from afar and had Jakobsen in his wheel. The Dutch champion wanted to pass his fellow countryman on the right, but the rider of Jumbo-Visma also went further and further to the right. As a result, Jakobsen was catapulted into the crush barriers and banged full on a photographer.
Groenewegen and a few other riders also fell. The Dutchman slipped first over the finish line, but was disqualified an hour after the end of the stage.
It is still unclear how serious Jakobsen is. According to his team Deceuninck-Quick-Step, he is currently being treated by doctors. It is also still unknown how Groenewegen is doing.
