Egan Bernal won the stage race Route d'Occitanie on Tuesday. In the final stage, the Frenchman Benoit Cosnefroy Bauke Mollema loved the day victory.
The last 195 kilometer drive from Lectoure to Rocamadour was preceded by one minute of applause for Nicolas Portal. The team leader of Team INEOS, who died suddenly earlier this year, came from the region.
Of a group of refugees, the Italian Fausto Masnada lasted the longest on the hilly course, but the rider from Bahrain-McLaren had to give up in the last kilometers.
AG2R rider Cosnefroy managed to escape on the final climb and kept the first group of pursuers behind for two seconds. Mollema crossed the line second and Bernal finished fourth.
The overall victory in the southern French course is a boost for Bernal towards the Tour de France. The Colombian defending champion showed a month before the start of the main cycling race to be in better shape than teammate Chris Froome. The Briton had to admit in the queen stage for more than 5 minutes on Monday.
