Australian nick kyrgios , number 40 of the world rankings, announced that it will not play the US Open , from the August 31 to September 13 , due to risks coronavirus pandemic in the country.

"I will not play at the US Open this year. It hurts deep down ... But I am doing this for the people , for my compatriots, for the hundreds of thousands of Americans who have lost their lives, for everyone," he said in a video published on social networks.

Kyrgios, who had already retired from the Cincinnati Masters 1000 , thus joins his compatriot Ashleigh Barty in his resignation from the American tournament.

The tennis player commented that it was time to focus on "what is important, which is health and safety", although he did not comment on the organization of the tournament to maintain the event.

Kyrgios also referred to "selfish players", though without naming them: "You have to all work together and not just focus on making money ."

"You have to think of others for once. This is what this virus is about. World ranking or money are not important. To players who think differently, I say good luck, but they play at their own risk." Nick Kyrgios concluded.
