Alex Dupont, who was notably the coach of Gueugnon who won the Coupe de la Ligue in 2000, died of a heart attack on the night of Friday to Saturday at the age of 66, announced his former club, the 'USL Dunkirk, in a press release. The death of this former midfielder, who was also the coach of Brest and Sedan, occurred at his home in La Turbie (Alpes-Maritimes), according to the regional daily La Voix du Nord which revealed the information.
Born in Dunkirk, a club where he will spend most of his playing career and his debut on the bench, Dupont had his greatest success in the 1999/2000 season. At the head of Gueugnon, then in D2, he won the Coupe de la Ligue at the expense of PSG (2-0), qualifying his team for the UEFA Cup: a unique feat in the history of a competition which, ironically, had its last edition on Friday evening, with the victory this time of PSG against Lyon, on penalties (0-0, 6-5 tab).

"He was a recognized coach, a man of convictions, an endearing and appreciated personality of our football who has achieved a remarkable career", paid tribute to the President of the French Federation Noël Le Graët, sending his "most sincere condolences to his family and relatives ”on behalf of the FFF.
After Gueugnon, he had coached Sedan, which he also had via the championship qualified for the UEFA Cup, then Laval, Amiens, the United Arab Emirates' hopeful selection but also Brest. At the head of the Breton club during the rise in the elite in 2010, he was elected best coach of Ligue 2 during the UNFP trophies and ensured the maintenance of Brest the following season.

After a short stint with AC Ajaccio, it was again in Brest that he ended his coaching career during the 2015/16 season. “Alex Dupont was known for his humility and availability. It will leave a great void in the heart of our club and the supporters, ”wrote the Gueugnon club on its site, recalling“ the stainless epic in 2000 ”as its main achievement within the Burgundy club. His other teams, and more generally the French football family also paid tribute to him on Sunday.
