Coronavirus disrupts Spanish league again - Daniel Marzo / PACIFIC PRES / SIPA

Unplayable. The Spanish League decreed last weekend that the match between La Coruña and Fuenlabrada could not take place and therefore decided to cancel the meeting between the two teams altogether. The meeting, scheduled for July 20, could not take place due to the large number of cases of coronavirus among the staff and the workforce of Fuenlabrada. 12 new cases were announced Saturday in the Madrid club, which has a total of 28 infected people.

"Aware of the impossibility of fixing a date even probable for the holding of the meeting", the Spanish Professional Football League (LaLiga) announced that it had communicated to the Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) "its decision to permanently suspend the match for exceptional cause and / or force majeure ”.

"Also, La Liga will communicate to the RFEF that the Elche CF team will be the one who will play the play-offs for the promotion" in the first division, added LaLiga in a statement. The team from the Madrid suburbs needed a draw to overtake Elche in the standings and reach the play-offs for accession among the Spanish elite.

The club accepts the sentence, not the players

"If the authorized sports institutions do not consider viable, in time and form, the holding of the match, CF Fuenlabrada will respect the decision", declared the club in a statement, while showing its will to play if such had been decision. But in another statement, Fuenlabrada's own players stood out from their leaders, saying they were "outraged" by the League's decision, and "reserving the right to take legal action" if the match against Le Deportivo was not reprogrammed. "We consider ourselves to be the only injured parties in this affair", they write.

According to the latest tests carried out, 28 members of the Fuenlabrada team, players and staff alike, are infected with the coronavirus. LaLiga appreciated “the enormous sacrifice” of “Fuenla” whose respect for the decision “means for his players the abandonment of what has been achieved with their effort and their work throughout the season to facilitate the end of competition with the rest of the clubs ”.
