Giovanni van Bronckhorst lost his first game as trainer of Guangzhou R&F in the Chinese Super League on Sunday. His team lost 3-0 at Shenzhen FC.
Guangzhou R&F fell behind in the first half due to an own goal from Li Songyi, who unluckily tipped the ball behind his own goalkeeper after a free kick. In the first twenty minutes of the second half, Shenzhen walked further away from the Van Bronckhorst team.
Harold Preciado used a penalty kick 63 minutes into the game and five minutes later, the referee again pointed to the spot after a brutal foul by Zhang Gong. This time Gao Lin stood behind the ball and he hit high and hard.
The Chinese Super League season was supposed to start in February, but the league start was delayed by months due to the corona crisis. Reigning champion Guangzhou Evergrande played the first game of the season against Shanghai Shenhua on Saturday and won 2-0.
The Guangzhou R&F of Van Bronckhorst is in the same group as those two teams. There are a total of two groups with eight clubs per pool. Numbers one to three of the group go to the championship playoffs, the bottom three have been sentenced to the conservation playoffs.
Van Bronckhorst was presented in January at Guangzhou R&F, where former AZ attacker Mousa Dembélé is also under contract. The 45-year-old Rotterdammer is working on his first trainer job abroad, after he was a coach of Feyenoord from 2015 to 2019.
