Andersson joined HV71 in January 2020 after leaving Rangers due to mental illness and ended the season with HV71.

Now the club confirms in a press release that the 21-year-old will stay.

Lias Andersson also has a contract with the New York Rangers 2020–2021, but is loaned to HV71 throughout the season.

"I want to thank the Rangers for understanding my situation and my desire to play in HV71. I found my way back to the game I want to play at the end of last season and look forward to a sequel in HV71. During the years in HV71 and Jönköping, I have acquired many good memories and positive feelings that I will build on when we reunite at the end of July, ”says Lias Andersson.

In June, Rangers said they wanted Lias Andersson back when the season restarted.

Respects the decision

- We have had discussions with Lias about coming over here to the training camp, but he felt that it was better for him to stay in his home country right now. We respect that decision. He has said he wants to be a New York Rangers player. "We will keep the rights to him," New York Rangers chairman John Davidson told the New York Post.

Lias Andersson left Rangers at the beginning of the year. He was then suspended by the NHL club and at the end of January he was ready to play in the SHL club HV71 on a loan.

In connection with this, he told about the tough times in an interview with Göteborgs-Posten.

- I sat and played video games all night, just sat and waited for the Swedes to wake up there at home to go to work. So I could call and talk some shit, like. It was a bad habit, he told the newspaper.
