Return to the fold for Unai Emery. After two more or less mixed experiences outside Spain, on the side of PSG first (2016-2018) and Arsenal then (2018-November 2019), the coach will succeed Javi Calleja on the bench of Villarreal la next season. Emery, a native of Hondarribia, in the Basque Country, therefore returned to Spain, where he had already coached Almeria (2006-2008), Valencia (2008-2012) and Sevilla FC (2013-2016).

"Villarreal CF has reached an agreement with Unai Emery for the Basque technician to lead the yellow team for the next three seasons," Villarreal said in a statement released this Thursday at midday, specifying that the coach will be presented to the press Monday morning.

Emery finds the Europa League, his first love

In Paris, Emery was the coach who led PSG during the famous "remount" against FC Barcelona in the round of 16 second leg of the Champions League in 2017 (6-1). At Arsenal, the Basque was hired with the heavy task of succeeding the legendary French coach Arsène Wenger, who had spent 22 years on the Gunners bench… But his adventure only lasted a season and a half.

Despite these failures, Unai Emery will have the opportunity to catch up on the European stage next season: Villarreal, fifth in La Liga, is qualified for the Europa League. A competition he knows perfectly well and in which he excels since the former Parisian coach won three consecutive Europa Leagues between 2014 and 2016 with Sevilla FC.
