The Villarreal CF has made it official Monday that coach Javier Calleja not continue on the bench next season despite having a year left on his contract. The club has communicated this decision to him this afternoon, since he has decided to make a change in the project, and one of the decisions in it is the departure of the coach's entity.

The Castellón club has made this decision after the team has closed one of the best seasons in recent years, qualifying for the European competition and achieving fifth place in the leaderboard.

However, the Castellón leaders had already decided to leave Javi Calleja from the club before the competition for the pandemic resumed, and despite this good final stretch, they did not want to reverse the decision taken in that period.

Calleja leaves Villarreal after three seasons at the helm of the team, reaching two classifications for the European competition, being also dismissed and recalled in the same campaign, in which he was able to save the team at a difficult time.

In a statement, the Castellón club thanked him "for his work, dedication and professionalism" during his time as coach of the first yellow team and wishes him the best of luck in his sports career. The Madrid coach is a club man, as he began his journey as a coach in the entity's base categories, to gradually climb to the bench of the first team.

A jump that came very quickly, when arriving at the first team there are very few games directed in the filial team and after the dismissal of Fran Escribá in the 17-18 campaign. The Madrid coach has led Villarreal CF in 131 official matches (57 wins, 30 draws and 44 losses).

Calleja's departure leaves the door open for Unai Emery's possible arrival at the club, a possibility that has been going strong for days and can be made official in the coming hours.
