The British government plans to return supporters to the stadiums in October after pilot events that start as early as July, Prime Minister Boris Johnson announced on Friday. "From October, we hope to bring the public back to the stadiums and re-authorize conferences and other economic gatherings," the conservative leader said Friday during a press briefing.

"We are going to organize larger gatherings in sites such as stadiums with a larger reopening on the horizon in the fall," he said. Mass rallies have been banned in the UK since March to limit the spread of the coronavirus, which has killed more than 45,000 people there.

But several major sporting events serving as tests must welcome the public from July: the world snooker championship, a horse race or friendly cricket matches. "Even if we will have to wait some time before the stadiums can be filled to 100% of their capacity, it is a big step in the right direction for the resumption of live sport in the country", welcomed the Minister of Sports Nigel Huddleston.

Box office receipts are an important source of revenue for clubs in many sports, especially for football teams in divisions below the Premier League.
