Police arrested a 12-year-old boy on Sunday as the alleged perpetrator of the racist insults that the Ivorian forward Wilfried Zaha received through social networks, shortly before Aston Villa and Crystal Palace met in a match on the 35th day of the English Premier League.

On his Twitter account, Zaha published three screenshots with racist messages that he had received through another social network, Instagram, from an alleged Aston Villa fan. One of the images was of members of the Ku Klux Klan , an American white supremacist organization.

After the game, which ended Aston Villa's 2-0 victory, West Midlands police announced they had arrested the alleged perpetrator of the insults, who turned out to be a 12-year-old boy. "We were alerted to a series of racist messages sent to a soccer player today and after the pertinent investigations we have detained a child," the police announced on their Twitter account.

"The 12-year-old boy from Solihull has been taken into custody. Thanks to all who alerted him. Racism will not be tolerated," police added.

Prior to that announcement, Aston Villa had already reacted to the events by posting a message on its Twitter account: "We regret the disgusting racist messages sent to @wilfriedzaha. We condemn any form of racial discrimination and join the Crystal Palace in this initiative." .

"We are working with the police to investigate this extremely serious event and when the culprit is identified, Aston Villa will sanction him for life," the Birmingham club said.

All Premier League clubs have been involved in a campaign to combat racism since the championship resumed in June after the halt due to the new coronavirus pandemic.

Before each game, the players put one knee on the ground, which has become a gesture against racism, and show support for the movement against racial discrimination 'Black Lives Matter' .
