Abdulmanap Nurmagomedov, the father and coach of UFC champion Khabib Nurmagomedov, died in a Moscow hospital on Friday at the age of 57.
"Sad news has arrived to me, friends, Abdulmanap Nurmagomedov has left this world," Chechen leader Ramzan Kadyrov, who is close friends with the Nurmagomedov family, writes on the chat app Telegram.
Abdulmanap Nurmagomedov had been in hospital for almost two months after being infected with the coronavirus. The Russian already had underlying health problems - he underwent heart surgery last year - and had to be put into an artificial coma twice.
Khabib Nurmagomedov (pictured in the article) wrote on Instagram last week that his father had recovered from COVID-19, but was still in intensive care due to complications of his heart and kidneys.
31-year-old Khabib Nurmagomedov, who was trained by his father from an early age, ranks as one of the best MMA fighters. The Russian from Dagestan is on 28 wins in 28 UFC fights.
He had to cancel his planned participation in UFC 249 due to the corona crisis and said in May that his ill father meant that he did not want to think about a new fight.
