Nigerian scorer Losc, Victor Osimhen, won the Marc-Vivien Foé prize, RFI and France 24, organizers of the award for the best African player in Ligue 1, announced on Monday.

The striker, author of 13 goals in the Championship, succeeds another Lille, the Ivorian Nicolas Pépé, who left last summer at Arsenal. He thus becomes the youngest winner of the trophy, at 21 years old.

Father's funeral

The native of Lagos is ahead of the Algerian from Monaco Islam Slimani and the Moroccan from Reims Yunis Abdelhamid. Three Senegalese continue the leading trio, Habib Diallo (Metz, 4th), Mbaye Niang (Rennes, 5th) and Idrissa Gueye (Paris SG), 6th tied with Malian Hamari Traoré (Rennes).

Osimhen, who arrived in Lille last summer from Charleroi, is one of the most coveted players in the transfer window. "I have understood for a long time that Victor will not be there next season," conceded northern coach Christophe Galtier, on June 19. He did not resume training with Mastiffs, being in Nigeria where he attended his father's funeral.

Marc-Vivien Foé Prize maintained

"The jury is made up of nearly 100 journalists specializing in French and African football from all media (radio, television, print media, Internet)", said the organizers in a press release.

Unlike the UNFP, the sports services of RFI and France 24 decided to maintain the Marc-Vivien Foé prize, named after the former Cameroonian player who died in 2003 at the age of 28, despite the season incomplete due to Covid-19 pandemic.
